TEXTBOOK: A First Course in Differential Equations, by Dennis Zill, 8th Edition, Thomson Brooks/Cole, Canada.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: First order and simple higher order differential equations with applications, linear differential equations, systems of DEs, Laplace transform, series solutions, numerical methods and partial DEs. Three credit hours.

PREREQUISITIES: MATH 272 with MATH 273 strongly recommended.

ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is checked each meeting.  Each unexcused absence in excess of 4 will result in deducting at least one point from your final average in the course.  A student absent from class bears the full responsibility for all subject matter and procedural information discussed in class.  Attendance will be checked by roll call or from homework handed in personally.

EVALUATION: There will be two unit tests, a cumulative final examination and assigned homework problems.  Homework will be collected periodically during the semester.  Each test, as well as the final exam, will count for 25 % of the final grade.  Homework average will count for 25% of the final grade also.

Letter grades will be determined from numerical grades as follows:

A  = 90 or above                      B+ = 86 – 87.9                        C+ = 75 – 76.9                        D = 60 – 64.9

A- =  88 – 89.9                        B   = 79 – 85.9                                    C   = 67 – 74.9                                    F = below 60                                                        B-  = 77 – 78.9                        C-  = 65 – 66.9

EXAM POLICY: In the event a student misses a test, s/he should contact the instructor immediately and provide reasons/documentation for his/er absence.  An unexcused absence from a test will result in a penalized grade.  A test absence will be excused only if the student presents sufficient verifiable evidence of acceptable, extenuating, unavoidable circumstances. An acceptable medical excuse must state explicitly that the holder should be excused from class.  Students missing class because of a family death must show evidence of the death and evidence of the relationship to the deceased.  Absences from tests for family social events will not be excused.

No student will be given a passing grade if he/she misses the two unit tests (excused or not).

Late homework will be penalized: 25% off for each day the homework is late.  No homework will be accepted after it has been discussed in class.

All excuses should be documented.  Do not use e-mail to tell me your reasons for being absent.

No e-mailed excuses will be accepted.

TENTATIVE TEST DATES:            To be announced

                                                            Final Exam     Thursday, April 24, 10:15 – 12:15
