Memorial Day of 2002 was a historic event for America; it was the first time that the President of the United States was outside of the country on Memorial Day. On this Memorial Day, President Bush, was present at the American Cemetery in Normandy France, and so were we. The American Cemetery was one of the planned stops during our time in France, but we had no idea that the President was going to be there giving a speech; we found out from a reporter who was staying in the same hotel that we were staying in. We were so excited. On memorial day we arrived at the American Cemetery, and after waiting outside for an hour, we were allowed in and seated in VIP seating. Our seats were only a few feet away from where the President was going to speak. We waited for an hour, after being seated, before anything started to happen. First, we listened to the bands play various patriotic songs, and then we watched as the Presidents helicopters landed, and finally the President of the United States was there. He made his way through the hundreds of white crosses and up to the podium; everyone became silent, and all eyes were on him. After the President was finished speaking, there was a fly over and a twenty-one gun salute. The scene was breath taking and an unforgettable experience.
