DOCTRINE OF THE SPIRIT

 Today is

THE 335 - Doctrine of the Spirit

Journal Assignments

1.  At the beginning of chapter one, Pinnock states, "Spirit is essentially the serendipitous power of creativity, which flings out a world in ecstasy and simulates within it an echo of the inner divine relationships, every seeking to move God's plan forward."  In light of Pinnock's statement about the Spirit, discuss how he understands the Spirit's role in the triune life of God.  Pay particular attention to Pinnock's description of God as loving communion and his description of the Spirit as ecstasy.  Also, try to keep in mind what we discussed in class about Augustine and the Cappadocians.  This should help you in your reading of Pinnock.  DUE FRIDAY, JANUARY 21ST.

2.  In this chapter, Pinnock uses his understanding of the Spirit as ecstasy and as the one who provides an echo of God's triune life in creation.  Your journal assignment is to describe how Pinnock's understanding of the Spirit informs his analysis of the Spirit's activity in creation.  What role does the Spirit play in creating and sustaining the world?  How is this different from the role that the Father and Son play?  Try to keep in mind ideas associated with ecstasy like creativity and serendipity.  DUE MONDAY, JANUARY 31ST.

3. Read Wesley's two sermons (see Wesley links on previous page, for "The Scripture Way of Salvation" and "Christian Perfection").  After reading both sermons, try to explain Wesley's understanding of Christian perfection or entire sanctification.  Once you explain Wesley's position, indicate whether you agree with it or not and why.  DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6.

4.  Read Pinnock, chapter 4. Focus on 119-29 and attempt to identify how Pinnock argues that the Spirit is present sacramentally and charismatically.  As part of your answer indicate Pinnock's views on water baptism and Eucharist.  DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27.
