About Dr. LeRoy

Donald LeRoy is an assistant professor of music at Lee University.  He teaches courses in church music, music theory and piano.  He has served as interim director of both the Ladies of Lee and Chapel Choir.

Before coming to Lee Dr. LeRoy served for nine years as a minister of music in Olive Branch, MS, and Tallahassee, FL.  His love for missions, music and travel have taken me to several parts of Europe and the Caribbean.  He has taught short sessions on music and worship at Church of God schools in Germany, Mexico and Russia.

In the summer of 2002 he married the Shannon Bishop.  They have two children: Jackson Todd was born in 2004 and Emma Grace was born in 2006.  Besides family and teaching, his other interests include various sports, music, reading, drawing and traveling.

His education includes a B.A. in Church Music from Lee University, a M.M. in Music Theory from Florida State University and a D.M.A. in Sacred Music from the University of Memphis.  The title of his dissertation is "The Church Hymnal (1951): A Shape-Note Hymnal of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN."  The paper is a historical account of music in the Church of God, the convention song and the Church Hymnal, affectionately known as the "Red back."  Dr. LeRoy has made several presentations based on his research on the Church Hymnal and its historical place in the Southern Gospel Convention Song and Shape Note tradition.

I just returned from teaching a seminar on piano improvisation for church music at the Church of God Bible school in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.  The school, Seminario Biblico Mexicano, is one of the few Pentecostal schools in Central America with a music school.  Here a couple of pictures of me with the students: Henry Argote (from Honduras), students from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Here are a few pictures for fun: Jackson in South Dakota, Emma as a Bee, Shannon and Jax, Dad & Jax Walk the Piano
