Helping Books to Last Longer

By Eric Waggoner

All of us would like to see our books last longer but rarely give much thought as how to do this.  In this article, I would like to offer some advice to help you preserve your books  longer.

The environment your books are stored in is the one major factor that affects how long your books will last.  What affects the environment most is temperature and relative humidity. It is very important for documents, books and other materials to be stored in a stable environment.  If the environmental conditions fluctuate too rapidly, deterioration of your books can be exponential.  The key is to keep the temperature and relative humidity controlled.

The recommended temperature for books is 68 to 70 degrees F.  The relative humidity needs to be between 40 to 55%.  It is very important to keep books and other papers at these standards.  By observing this simple standard of temperature and relative humidity, you can almost double the life of your books.
