Lighting the Path Heritage Exhibit Opens

The Dixon Pentecostal Research Center and archives opened the new Lighting the Path heritage exhibit on October 28, 2004, in Cleveland, Tennessee.  It celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Church of God’s first general youth program – the Young People’s Endeavor.  On display are past issues of The Lighted Pathway a monthly youth magazine, artifacts, memorabilia, letters, photographs, and other historical documents.

Earliest Known History of the Church of God

In an effort to serve patrons better, the Dixon Research Center is posting the Church of God's earliest known documents to our website.  The first of these is "A Brief History of the Church that is Now Recognized as the Church of God," written by A. J. Tomlinson as part of his book The Last Great Conflict and published in 1913. 

 

2005 Lighting The Path Calendars Available at Reduced Price!

Children, youth and Christian discipleship have been at the heart of the Church of God from our earliest history.  "Lighting the Path" is the theme of the new 2005 Church of God Heritage Calendar.

As National Youth Director, Ray H. Hughes Sr. preached at Trafalgar Square in London, England, on the subject of “Death and Judgment” in 1954.

Dr. Ray H. Hughes Sr. donated his papers, photos, and memorabilia during the summer of 2004.  These materials reflect over 60 years of ministry in the Church of God and the pentecostal movement.  The following article honors and highlights the ministry of Dr. Hughes.

 

A Pentecostal Preacher: Honoring Ray H. Hughes Sr.

Expectation filled the night air of September 27, 1948, as the young evangelist Ray H. Hughes gave his dynamic message on “The Answer to the Youth Problem” in the 20,000 seat Hollywood Bowl that was filled to capacity.  Newspapers considered him “a vibrant, new voice for America’s youth.”  At the altar call, “a mighty melting came as the Holy Spirit convicted men and women, boys and girls of almost every color and race...and there came a great surging forward to the altars.”

Hand, Marcus V., ed. The Pentecostal Ministers Sermon Resource Manual.  Vol. 7.  Pathway Press: Cleveland, TN, 2004.

 

A collection of sermons selected, edited and designed for Pentecostal ministers. These are divided conveniently into two sections: Manuscript Sermons--which offer a total message with appropriate illustrations and guidelines; and Outline Sermons--which provide seed thoughts so one can include personal illustrations and significant points.

 

A Classic

Frodsham, Stanley H. With Signs Following: The Story of the Latter Day Pentecostal Revival. Gospel Publishing House: Springfield, MO, 1926.

Frodsham gives an historical account of the Pentecostal movement from 1906 to 1926 through various personal testimonies. The book's narrative follows the Pentecostal movement in such places as Japan, India, Los Angeles, and Germany.  The author discusses his own testimony as well and of the mighty outpouring of God across the world.

Moore, David S.  The Shepherding Movement: Controversy and Charismatic Ecclesiology. T&T Clark International: New York, 2003.

Moore provides a historical narrative of the controversial Shepherding movement of the 1970s and 1980s.  The author gives a balanced perspective on the movement’s history by emphasizing its theological self-understanding,  ecclesiology and pastoral practices.

Ma, Wonsuk; Menzies, Robert P. The Spirit and Spirituality: Essays in Honour of Russell P. Spittler. T&T Clark: New York, 2004.

This collection of essays discusses three areas of Pentecostal Spirituality: theological, historical, and missiological.  Each essay represents a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.  This book hopes to enlighten others about the dedication of Dr. Spittler’s life to the Pentecostal Movement. 

The International Scene

Anderson, Allan.  An Introduction to Pentecostalism: Global Charismatic Christianity.  Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, 2004.

 

Anderson offers a refreshing interpretation of the Pentecostal movement from a global perspective.  His book focuses on the historical context and the theological emphases of Pentecostalism.  This is achieved by tracing and connecting the origins, development and significance of the Pentecostal movement throughout the world.
