Bridgeford Church of God Donates History

The Research Center recently accepted the Bridgeford Church of Gods history from its author, Bobbie Brantley.  Her thoughts of someone writing her church's history began in 1991.  However, it was not until 1996 that her dream of someone writing its history became true.  Below, she shares her testimony of writing the Bridgeford church history and gives some practical advice about the process.

Writing a Church's History: A Testimony

"I knew if I was to write a history about our church I would need to know and learn all I could about the church now as well as the early church.  As I began to listen to people tell about experiences through the years that were both spiritual and entertaining, I realized that as much as possible should be recorded.  So, I needed direction and I began praying for that direction.  Most history books I had seen of other churches were merely statistics about pastors and finances.  I wanted stories about actual people – the back bone of a church.  That’s not to say pastors and finances aren’t important, they are.  It takes all three to build a really good church.

Preservation Tips

Long Term Storage Media

Compact discs, memory cards, hard drives, and floppy disks all have one goal.  They help you store your data until it is needed.  But as everyone has probably experienced with digital media their fidelity always fails at the wrong time.  Also, studies have shown that we do not really know how long digital media will last.  For one, it is still so new that not much research has been produced.  Secondly, electronics change so rapidly that keeping up with new technology is difficult to do.

Newly Published

Archer, Kenneth J.  A Pentecostal Hermeneutic for the Twenty-First Century: Spirit, Scripture and Commentary.  New York, NY: T & T Clark International, 2004.

Archer emphasizes that the original Pentecostal hermeneutic must be revisited and updated so as to maintain the authenticity of Pentecostalism, but give a new contemporary approach to hermeneutic strategy.  He defends the Pentecostal tradition’s validity as a Christian restoration movement and its ability to offer insight in the area of hermeneutics.  He also maintains that hermeneutics is not only concerned with methodology of scripture interpretation, but also with the reader.

Lowery, T.L., with Craig L Ervin.  Apostles and Prophets: Reclaiming the Biblical Gifts.  Cleveland, TN: T.L. Lowery Ministries International, 2004.

Speaking to a disillusioned world, T.L. Lowery reaffirms that the purpose of prophets and apostles is to serve as the foundation of the church.  Lowery differentiates between job descriptions of the apostle and the prophet and gives Biblical examples to illustrate specific characteristics of each from both the Old and New Testament.  Lowery clearly establishes women’s role in apostolic ministry and goes on to outline the role which apostles and prophets will play in the end times.  He wraps the book up with ways to identify a false prophet and put true apostolic and prophetic ministry into practice.

Morrow, Jimmy, with Ralph W. Hood Jr.  Handling Serpents: Pastor Jimmy Morrow’s Narrative History of His Appalachian Jesus’ Name Tradition.  Macon, GA: Mercer University Press, 2005.

Appalachian minister Jimmy Morrow details his serpent-handling history which began at the age of fifteen. With over 30 pages of pictures Morrow delivers a who’s who in the family tree of snake handling.  He follows the lives of notables such as George Hensley and Punkin Brown, triumphing their faith and sacrifice and including stories of conversion and death alike.  Towards the end of the book, Morrow inserts his personal history and Biblical interpretations.

Ware, Steven L.  Restorationism in the Holiness Movement in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries.  Lewiston, NY: The Edwin Mellen Press, 2004.

In this scholarly work, Steven L. Ware is not concerned with the entire range of restorationism movements, but rather the movements begun by those radical leaders who left their own denomination behind to begin "holiness" churches.  Ware argues that restorationism played a key role in the development of these leaders’ holiness theology.  He also states that by uniting the Pentecostal experience with the restorationist ideology, the radical holiness movement achieved a unique form of restorationism.

Schweiger, Beth Barton, and Donald G. Matthews, eds.  Religion in the American South: Protestants and Others in History and Culture.  Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 2004.

This book contains a collection of varied essays all concerned with religion and the South.  With topics including race, pain, revival, music and gender, eleven essays offer scholarly looks at the "nooks and crannies that religious historians have missed."  Although meant to be a southern collection, many themes included resonate with the entire American Identity and Pentecostalism in particular.

The International Scene

Betancourt, Esdras.  Hispanics: Their History, Their Presence, Their Mission.  Cleveland, TN: Pathway Press, 2003. This publication is also available in Spanish.

In order to address the increasing influence of Hispanic culture in America, Betancourt seeks to educate both Hispanics and non-Hispanics on the history and biblical relevance of Latinos.  The book outlines a brief history of Spain, including the Latino struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism.  He then brings the story to the United States by describing how the Pentecostal movement, and more specifically the Church of God, reached the Hispanic community in the past.  He finally addresses the broader issue of multiculturalism in the United States by giving census statistics and offers strategies and projects to further reach the multicultural church community.
