E. L. Simmons Mystery of the Trinity Republished

Recently, the family of E. L. Simmons reprinted and donated the book, The Mystery of the Trinity, that was first published in 1928.  During our conversation with his daughter Peggy Simmons, the suggestion was made that the family put into writing some of the memories they had of their father E. L. Simmons.  This suggestion was quickly put into action and the family put together some memories for the Research Center to publish.  We hope you enjoy them!

At a great price, The Mystery of the Trinity can be purchased by sending an e-mail to Peggie Simmons at Simmonspeggie@aol.com.

Memories of Daddy

"Daddy believed in having fun.  He spent time with his kids as a group and made a game out of music study, dictionary study, and of course, Bible study.  While traveling on long or short trips, we never knew when we would stop to fish, eat watermelon beside the road, or have some other adventure."

Arrington, French, L.  Unconditional Eternal Security:  Myth or Truth?  Cleveland, TN: Pathway Press, 2005.

This book is easily read and clearly written.  Concerning the question of eternal security, Arrington mentions some scholarly opinions, but mainly focuses on the Biblical text to form his argument.  Each chapter covers a section of the Bible from the Old Testament to relevant books in the New Testament, and concludes with a summary and study questions.

Burpeau, Kemp Pendelton. God’s Showman: A Historical Study of John G. Lake and South African/American Pentecostalism. Oslo, Norway: Refelks Publishing, 2004.
Burpeau’s background leads to an objective report on the life of an early Pentecostal missionary to South Africa. He portrays John G. Lake as a comparison with Paul; a flawed man used of God. The work is very detailed and well documented, including both pages of text and notes.

Hart, Larry D. Truth Aflame: Theology for the Church in Renewal. Revised Edition. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2005.
Emphasizing the importance of educated Christians, this book seeks to revitalize the church with theology. Hart encourages Christians of today to balance “head knowledge” and “heart knowledge.” He writes with the intent that his material will benefit both ministers and laity.

Hughes, Ray H. Pentecostal Preaching. Revised Edition. Cleveland, TN: Pathway Press, 2004.
Dedicating each chapter to a different facet, Hughes develops a detailed definition of Pentecostal preaching. He addresses areas such as technique and person, and includes a chapter on the history of preaching. The book is filled with practical advice from a veteran with 65 years of experience in the field.

Lord, Andrew. Spirit-Shaped Mission: A Holistic Charismatic Missiology. Waynesboro, GA: Paternoster Press, 2005.
Though focusing on missiology from a Pentecostal-charismatic tradition, Andrew Lord takes a broader approach to the topic. The first half of the book addresses Pentecostal-Charismatic understandings of mission, while the second half addresses content, nature, context, etc., of the theology of mission.

Warrington, Keith. Healing and Suffering: Biblical and Pastoral Reflections. Waynesboro, GA: Paternoster Press, 2005.

Warrington traces suffering and divine healing throughout the Bible. He offers direction to those seeking answers to common questions regarding the subject matter. A detailed table of contents and scripture index should make finding specific information easy.

The International Scene

López, R. Darío. La Misión Liberadora de Jesús: El Mensaje del Evangelio de Lucas. Lima, Perú: Ediciones Puma, 2004.

As a Church of God pastor living within the boundary lines of the poor, Dario Lopez Rodriguez writes on the liberating message of Jesus Christ found in the Gospel Message of Luke. This book offers a concise understanding of what the mission of Christ should be in the 21st Century. It also emphasizes the universal importance that God places on loving the poor and outcasts of society. It is a great book for leaders in the church, theology students, and everyone who shares in fulfilling the mission of Christ in our world today.
